SWEDISH TOURIST KILLER GETS 50 YEARS

A PETTY thief who admitted to shooting dead two Swedish athletes holidaying in South Africa’s Umhlanga resort last year was on Tuesday sentenced to 50 years in jail. Justice Jan Combrink delivered the sentence in the Durban High Court saying self-confessed thief Francois Minaar, 27, was a cold and calculating murderer, public SABC radio reported. Earlier in the week Minaar admitted to shooting dead Anders Per Olof Fransson and Jan-Anders Andersson in their holiday flat at the Umhlanga coastal holiday town, north of Durban, in February 1998. In a plea submitted to the court, Minaar said he had travelled to Umhlanga to burgle one of the many holiday flats there. He was disturbed while rifling through one flat and fired shots in a panic, he said.
