NIGERIA’S outgoing military ruler General Abdulsalami Abubakar on Wednesday welcomed the decision of the Commonwealth to readmit Nigeria from May 29 as a diplomatic “breakthrough”. Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku earlier on Wednesday announced the decision of the heads of government to lift the suspension of Nigeria’s membership from the day it returns to civilian rule, in 10 days time. Speaking to reporters in Abuja, Abubakar said he is delighted by the news. “We have made a substantial breakthrough in the area of diplomacy. We have been able to bring our country to take its rightful place in the community of nations,” he said. Nigeria was suspended from membership of the 54-nation body in 1995 following the execution of minority rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others.
