KIRSTEN’S RECORD STILL SAFE

INDIAN opener Saurav Ganguly’s 183 against Sri Lanka on Wednesday was the second highest individual score in World Cup history. Only Gary Kirsten’s 188 not out against the United Arab Emirates in 1996 surpassed it in World Cup play. Ganguly made it to fourth on the all-time one-day total list. Pakistan’s Saeed Anwar’s 194 against India in 1996-7, West Indies’ Viv Richards’ 189 not out against England in 1984, and Kirsten’s performance are all ahead of him. Meanwhile Rahul Dravid’s 145 against World Cup holders Sri Lanka made him only the second player in World Cup history to hit centuries in consecutive games. Dravid hit 104 not out against Kenya in India’s previous match. Australia’s Mark Waugh hit 130 against Kenya and 126 against India in back-to-back games in 1996.
