LEDWABA TO KEEP TITLE FROM KING

WHEN Lehlohonolo Ledwaba steps into the ring against Texan John Michael Johnson at the Carousel in Hammanskraal on Saturday night, he will be fighting for more than the vacant IBF junior featherweight crown. Ledwaba will not only be striving to maintain the South African monopoly on the title, he’ll also be aiming to keep it away from controversial American promoter Don King. Johannesburg-based Rodney Berman has staged 23 fights for the belt which have grossed more than R25 million for his company. “Golden Gloves has paid a fortune for this fight. It wasn’t the prerogative of South Africa to host this, it went to purse bids. But I firmly believe the home-town support is going to lift this out the trenches for Ledwaba.” But should the SA champion fail, the belt will become the property of Johnson and flamboyant promoter King.
