SOLDIERS PROTECT PITCHES

BRITISH army soldiers and Royal Navy sailors were called up to help with security arrangements during the World Cup match between India and Sri Lanka in Taunton on Wednesday. Around 20 Royal Marines and sailors from HMS Somerset formed a protective guard as the players left the pitch at the end of India’s innings at the home of English county side Somerset. A spokesman for the World Cup organising committee said he did not know whether the troops – a rare sight at British sporting events – will be used in the remaining matches. “All security matters will come under review at the meeting in Birmingham tomorrow (Thursday),” spokesman Andy Edwards said. “But I think it is safe to say that we will not be calling in the army.” Organisers have appealed to the British governmment to introduce emergency legislation outlawing pitch invasions. The Home Office is currently considering the request, but has indicated a quick change in the law is unlikely.
