AMPLATS DELAYS RETRENCHMENTS

AN Anglo-American platinum mine in Northern Province has delayed firing 400 mineworkers by one month. Anglo American Platinum Corporation Limited’s (Amplats) Lebowa Platinum Mines has decided to consult further with the workers before starting with retrenchments, explained Amplats spokesperson, Johan Adler, on Wednesday. He said the company would have retrenched 400 of its 2500 workers at the end of the week, but that provincial finance, trade and industry MEC, Thaba Mufamadi, intervened. “Mufamadi urged the mine to give workers’ unions a chance to come up with a proposal that will see fewer workers being retrenched,” Adler explained. He said the unions were given one month to come up with acceptable proposals, after which retrenchments will begin at the end of June.
