RWANDA has released 143 more prisoners accused of involvement in the 1994 genocide of ethnic Tutsis, because of lack of evidence against them, according to a report from the public prosecutor in Kibungo. The prisoners were all set free on Friday in Kibungo, southwest Rwanda, the report said. More than 1900 prisoners accused of genocide are currently detained at Kibungo prison. So far this year, more than 2,300 prisoners have been freed because there is insufficient evidence to bring them to trial. This leaves 123,000 people still detained on genocide charges in the country’s 19 prisons.
