NIGERIA’S ‘OBNOXIOUS’ LAWS TARGETED

NIGERIA’S national assembly is set to remove repressive laws from the country’s statute books, a top official said on Tuesday. “We are going to set up a committee to look into the laws and fish out those ones that you and I regard as being obnoxious,” Senate President Evans Enwerem told reporters here. Enwerem said the senate will start deliberations on such laws when it reconvenes on Wednesday. He said it appears that all Nigerians favour the removal of repressive laws from the statute books. The unpopular legislative legacy of decades of military rule in Nigeria includes the right of authorities to detain citizens without trial.
