Arendse down with injured knee

WEDNESDAY, 12.30PM:

SOUTH AFRICAN goalkeeper Andre Arendse’s World Cup may be over as he bacame the latest victim of the injury jinx surrounding Bafana Bafana as he injured his knee during practice on Monday night.

Arendse was on crutches before he was taken to hospital in Vichy to undergo tests and observation on the injured knee. Arendse was disappointed before being taken to hospital, saying, “It’s not good.”

Arendse injured the knee after falling awkwardly in an attempt to save a shot during a public training session on Monday.

“The team doctor (Victor ramathelese) felt the injury was serious enough to send the player for further observation,” said Molife Mika Bafana Bafana media spokesman.

CAMEROON SOCCER CHIEF IN TICKET SCAM

CAMEROON Football Association chief Vincent Onana is to face an official investigation into a scam involving thousands of World Cup tickets. Onana apparently sold 3 500 tickets to a London agency that were allocated to fans in Cameroon. Onana, whose passport has been seized, denies any wrong-doing, and said that the passing on of tickets is a “normal” practice followed by three-quarters of countries participating in the World Cup.

WOMEN SURFERS AT JEFFREYS

THE best 11 women surfers in the world will compete in the R150 000 Billabong MSF Womens Pro held at Supertubes at Jeffreys Bay. The competition is the sixth of 11 World Championship Tour events and will run in conjuctionthe with the R600 000 mens event from July 1-11 in the fabled surf at Supertubes. The women competing are: Lisa Andersen, Layne Beachley, Rochelle ballard, Megan Abubo, Pam Burridge, Neridah Falconer, Trudy Todd, Pauline Menczer, Lynette MacKenzie, Serena Brooke and Pru Jeffries.
