FORMER South African cricket great Jackie McGlew died at his Craighall Park home on Tuesday after a long battle against leukemia.
McGlew (69) captained South Africa in 14 test matches between 1947 and 1967. His score of 255 not-out against New Zealand is the second highest international score ever recorded.
McGlew’s first-class career included 27 centuries in the 12 170 he scored at an average of almost 46 runs. In McGlew’s Test career he chalked up 2440 runs in 34 Tests at an average of just over 42.
McGlew played for Natal from 1948 to 1967, and skippered the province from 1951 to 1967. He was voted Sportsman of the Year in 1955.
McGlew is survived by his wife, Patricia, daughters Jacqueline and Vivienne, and sons Lloyd and David.

SUGARBOY KO’S REDS
Thulani “Sugarboy” Malinga, who bacame the second oldest person to win a world title, at age 42 by knocking out Frederick Alvarez in the 11th round of their WBF super-middleweight title fight in Denmark has become a sporting celebrity in Russia. Malinga has been invited by the Russian Boxing Federation to give motivational talks to members of youth boxing clubs during his week-long visit to Moscow at the end of this month. “He is an amazing person for his age,” says Russian commentator Andre Babaev. “His fight last week received the highest rating on Russian TV and he is now a big hit among our youth. He will enjoy hero status when he gets here.”

SORTING OUT BOXING
A TWO-TIER programme, in which all the world’s boxing sanctioning bodies will be allowed to operate in South Africa has been urged by the department of sport. The recommendation suggests four bodies be recognised as as the senior world organisations –WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO — and given A-Grade status. The WBU, WBF, IBO, IBA, IBC and others will be given a group B-status.

SA COMMONWEALTH Games Association chairman Mthobi Tyamzashe reacted angrily to reports of the CGA cutting back on the number of participants being sent to the Games. “It’s a misconception that there have been team cuts,” he said. “No cuts have been have been effected…and and the inference that the CGA interferes with the selection of the teams couldn’t be further from the truth.”

CAMEROON Football Association chief Vincent Onana is to face an official investigation into a scam involving thousands of World Cup tickets. Onana apparently sold 3 500 tickets to a London agency that were allocated to fans in Cameroon. Onana, whose passport has been seized, denies any wrong-doing, and said that the passing on of tickets is a “normal” practice followed by three-quarters of countries participating in the World Cup.
