SPRAY THE CULPRIT?

HERSCHELLE Gibbs said a spray used to treat a sore finger may have caused him to drop a vital catch off Australian captain Steve Waugh in Sunday’s World Cup Super Six game. Waugh had scored 56 when Gibbs spilled a simple catch, appearing to let the ball slip from his hand as he tried to throw it up in celebration. Waugh went on to score 120 not out in an Australian win that took them into a semi-final against South Africa on Thursday. Gibbs told Sky television that a spray given to numb the pain on a sore finger hit while he scored 101 in the South African innings may have contributed to the blunder. But he did not use it as an excuse. “I dropped the catch and that was that,” he said.
