STENCH OF CAT URINE HAS FUR FLYING

A CONSTANT stench of cat urine has prompted outraged residents in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal to create four privately funded air pollution testing stations in the coal mining town. The testing stations will be funded by donations from residents and local businesses and are designed to test for dust, sulphur dioxide and nitrous oxide. The stench in Newcastle has been blamed on chemical spillage from the Karbochem synthetic rubber plant and has caused severe discomfort to Arbor Park residents for over a week, irritating the eyes, sinus as well as throat and nasal passages. Despite numerous articles in the local Newcastle Advertiser, including a front page feature last week, many Arbor Park residents say Karbochem just does not care, and criticise the municipality for failing to deal with the problem. Karbochem refused to comment.
