MOZAMBIQUE’S MAIZE SURPLUS

MOZAMBIQUE will have around 150000 tonnes of staple white maize for export this year after a bumper harvest, according to the Board of Trade’s monthly cereals bulletin. The bulletin, which was published in Maputo this week, said the surplus Is mainly in the north and centre of the country, as it was last year. The country is expected to produce around one million tons of maize this year. It is expected that most of the surplus will be sold either in formal or informal trade to neighbouring countries, including Malawi which has become a market for surplus Mozambican maize. Last year Mozambique sold an estimated 14000 tonnes to Malawi. Exact export figures are impossible to obtain since an unknown slice of the trade is informal. The trade bulletin said Mozambique was also looking at Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania as potential customers this year as they are expected to have maize shortages.
