England fights back

MONDAY, 6.30PM:

ENGLAND are fighting back fiercely in the face of a renewed South African onslaught on the final day of the third cricket Test at Old Trafford on Monday.

English skipper Alec Stewart, who played a remarkable innings up to lunch, was eventually dismissed for 164 superbly played runs. Stewart was caught by Lance Klusener off the bowling of Donald.

Stewart’s dismissal saw the English middle-order collapse somewhat, with four wickets falling for only 33 runs.

Graham Thorpe and Dominic Cork crashed out for only one run between them, Thorpe’s woes continuing as he was clean bowled by Allan Donald for a duck, and Cork taking a walk for one after being bamboozled by a Paul Adams delivery.

Ashley Giles was next to go, beautifully caught by Brian McMillan at slip off the bowling of Allan Donald. The safest hands in the business made no mistake sending Giles trudging back to the pavilion for only one run.

Robert Croft and Darren Gough are trying to keep the English ship afloat against the South African attack, which has suffered in the absence of Shaun Pollock and Lance Klusener.
