SA juniors blitz English

THURSDAY, 12.30PM:

THE South African Under-21 team beat their English counterparts by 41-12 in their Sanzar/UAR U21 Tournament match in the second round of the event at the UWC Stadium in Bellville on Wednesday night.

The South Africans, who lost 41-6 to Argentina in their tournament opener, blitzed the English with a five-try strike in the first half. The English could not recover from the stunning start, and went into half-time trailing 34-7.

It was the English side’s second defeat of the tournament.

Meanwhile, the rampant Argentinian Under-21s beat the New Zealand team narrowly by 21-11 at UWC on Wednesday night.

New Zealand led 8-0 at half time, but the Argentinians fought spiritedly, beating the junior All Blacks for the first time.

TEAMS TO PLAY IRELAND

THE South African cricket team travel to Downpatrick in Northern Ireland on Thursday for the first of their two one-day games against Ireland on Friday.

SPRINGBOKS LEAVE FOR TRI-NATIONS

THE Springbok rugby squad will leave South Africa on Thursday night to begin their Tri-Nations campaign.

KNOX BACK TO SA

FORMER Wallaby flyhalf David Knox is returning to South Africa to play for Natal in this year’s Currie Cup. Knox left Sydney on Wednesday after agreeing to a contract on Tuesday.

BULLS GET NINE TRIES

THE Blue Bulls beat the Zimbabwe national rugby side on Wednesday by 63-7 in Harare, running in nine tries.

U23 SOCCER SQUAD TO GERMANY

THE Under-23 South African soccer squad will leave on Sunday for an intensive training camp in Germany as part of their preparations for the Sydney 2000 Olympics qualifiers. Apart from their friendly matches against local clubs, the squad are also scheduled to meet the Omani national U23 squad for a friendly international.

CRAVEN WEEK RESULTS

THE Golden Lions came from behind to beat KwaZulu-Natal 34-30 in their U19 Craven Week rugby match played at the Isak Steyl Stadium at Vanderbijlpark on Wednesday. The half-time score was 20-10 in favour of the Natalians.

Griquas hauled back 19 points in the second half to beat Free State by 22-16 in their Craven Week match. The half-time score was 13-3 in favour of the Free State boys.

Eastern Province Country Districts beat North-West by 22-15. EP skipper, flanker Pierre Els, scored a hat trick of tries. The half-time score was 10-3 in favour of EP.

Border Academy routed North-West Country Districts 34-11, with Border right wing Vuyisile Mbula and fullback Freddie Lee playing very well. The half-time score was 13-6 to the Academy side.

South-Western Districts Academy went down 27-7 to a KwaZulu-Natal XV in their Craven Week match. The half-time score was 20-0 in favour of the Natalian side.
