SOUTHERN Sun is investigating the arrest last week of 177 members of the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers’ Union, the hotel group said on Monday. Southern Sun industrial relations director Steve Lonie could not comment on whether the workers, who are among those on a legal strike, would lose their jobs. The 177 workers were arrested for staging an illegal public gathering outside the Garden Court Holiday Inn on the East Rand on Thursday after they allegedly ignored a police warning to disperse. The workers are among 800 employees at 15 Southern Sun hotels who have been on strike since June 16 over a wage and job security dispute with the company.
