DURBANITE Tamarys Walters achieved a career best result on Thursday when she beat reigning World Surfing Champion Layne Beachley into second place to advance through to the quarter finals of the Gunston 500. Beachley, who also currently leads the 1999 world rankings, was almost packing her bags for home in the two-through, two-out format, but managed to hold off Capetonian Kay Holt for second place. South Africa’s number one ranked women surfer, Heather Clark from Port Shepstone, looked unbeatable in her encounter with Serena Brooke, Crystal Vail and Julie Morris (all Australia), sealling the heat literally before it had began. In the men’s division, three time world champion Tom Curren advanced though his round five heat. South Africa’s best result came from young Davey Weare. The 18-year-old edged his way closer to the money rounds by beating Rodrigo Rocha from Brazil and Jason Bogle from Hawaii.
