MOTHER TRIES, WITH OTHERS, TO CASTRATE SON

FIVE people, including a 65-year-old pensioner and her daughter, appeared briefly in the Mkhuhlu periodical court on Monday in connection with attempting to castrate a man. They were not asked to plead on charges of attempted murder after they allegedly tried to cut off the testicles of Charles Thabiso Mhlanga, (26) a sangoma from the Cunningmore tribal trust near Hazyview. The five people include Mhlanga’s mother Ania Mabasa, sister Emmelina Mhlanga and nephew Vusi Mokoena. The case was postponed to August 25 for further investigation. Mhlanga told police that the accused atacked him after having made him drunk during a sangoma graduation ceremony. “They wanted my genitals because I’m the strongest sangoma in the family since I inherited all of my father’s ancestral powers,” he said.
