VOTER REGISTRATION KICKS OFF IN MOZAMBIQUE

VOTER registration for Mozambique’s presidential and legislative elections kicked off in the country on Tuesday, despite some access and weather problems in northern Niassa, central Sofala and southern Inhambane provinces. The voter registration runs until September 17. It’s the third registration to take place in Mozambique since the 1992 peace agreement ending 16 years of armed conflict between the ruling Frelimo party and the ex-rebel Renamo movement. There are about 8 million potential voters to be registered by more than 12000 polling staff. The process in the northern Niassa province has been delayed because of mechanical problems with the helicopter allocated to ferrying both materials and staff.
