MOZ EXPORTS GROWING

MOZAMBIQUE’S exports earned the country $16-million, or 7% more in 1998 than in the previous year, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) said on Friday. In a report published Friday by the independent daily MEDIAFAX, the INE said Mozambique’s total export earnings hit $246-million last year, compared with $230-million in 1997. Some 51,3% of last year’s exports went to three countries, two of which are regional neighbours, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe was the top customer, importing a total of 19,2%, followed by South Africa with 17,2% and Spain with 14,8%. The commercial attache in the Zimbabwean High Commission in Maputo, Ntokozo Ncube, said that his country’s top imports from Mozambique include hydro-electricity from the giant Cahora Bassa dam, as well as seafood and motor vehicle tyres.
