FEARING loss of income from tariffs, Tanzania said on Tuesday it is pulling out of Africa’s largest trading bloc. Iddi Simba, minister for industry and commerce, told Parliament in Tanzania’s political capital, Dodoma, that a proposal to reduce customs tariffs by 90% within the community led to Tanzania’s decision to withdraw from the 21-nation Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, or Comesa. Tanzania has already reduced tariffs by 80%, Simba told lawmakers. While opting out of Africa’s largest trade group, Simba said Tanzania has no intention of leaving the East African Cooperation, a three-nation bloc of Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. The three nationsformerly of the East African Community, are expected to sign a treaty in October calling for a free-trade zone, monetary union and eventual political federation.
