Border thumps Griquas

MWP, East London | Saturday 6.30pm.

BORDER’s doughty bunch of semi-professionals continued their rise up the Currie Cup table with a fourth win in five matches with a 21-5 win over a Griquas side whose slump has been almost as dramatic.

Two first half tries by David Maidza and three penalties early in the second half for impressive fullback Wayne Weyer were the scoring bursts that converted the Bulldogs’ superiority into something tangible.

When they go fully professional – as they hope to do next season – Border may just begin to think of adding to the two Curie Cup titles they won in the 1930s.

Their victory was established in the forwards where hooker Delarey du Preez was outstanding along with flanker Bennie Jacobs – in his 100th game for the province – and returning eighth man Graham Carlson.

Heavy overnight rain made for treacherous underfoot conditions which clearly discomforted Griquas who scored their points through their best player Janneman Brand who had to leave the field shortly afterwards with what appeared a serious leg injury.

Border’s four victories this season represent their best return yet in a 14-team Currie Cup and – on this evidence – they haven’t finished yet.
