PETER HAIN NAMED UK MINISTER FOR AFRICA

FORMER South African resident and anti-apartheid campaigner Peter Hain has been appointed British Minister for Africa, the British High Commission in Cape Town announced on Tuesday. He met South African High Commissioner to London Cheryl Carolus earlier on Tuesday, but details of their discussions were not made public. Hain left South Africa at the age of 16 because of his family’s anti-apartheid activities. He is one of two Afrikaans-speaking Labour MPs. Commission spokeswoman Samantha Hyde said Hain would be teaming up with another anti-apartheid campaigner and regular visitor to South Africa Richard Carbon MP, who has been appointed Trade International Minister. Carbon was treasurer of the anti-apartheid movement during its last eight years, having previously served on the executive for about 15 years.
