THE African National Congress Youth League on Sunday urged its members to volunteer as tutors in schools as part of a government drive to promote literacy. The Youth League said after a two-day meeting of its national executive committee (NEC) that it was inspired by the launch last month by Education Minister Kader Asmal of “Tirisano”, a national education campaign. “In the same spirit, the NEC resolved to call upon all Youth League members to volunteer as tutors in realising the vision of breaking the back of illiteracy in the next five years,” said spokesman Blessing Manale. manale also announced a Young Women’s Parliament in Bloemfontein on Monday to address issues facing young women in South Africa such as rape, abuse and child maintenance. “We further reaffirmed our call that the voting age should be lowered to sixteen years,” Manale said.
