DURBAN Roodepoort Deep gold mine announced on Wednesday that it is considering closing three unprofitable mine shafts at its West Wits mine. The closure threatens the jobs of 260 miners, most of them contract workers. The mining group said in a statement that the closures are sparked by the low gold price. The announcement comes as the National Union of Mine Workers on Wednesday accused the management at West Wits mine, part of DRD, of illegally dismissing 107 mine workers who refused to work last Saturday after allegedly being asked to do so on short notice. Most of the mines 1500 workers from West Wits are from the Eastern Cape and Mozambique.
