MPUMALANGA police are investigating the possibility that Tuesday’s six-tanker blaze and a subsequent explosion at Ermelo railway station which injured five firefighters and two policemen — may have been sabotage. Firefighter brothers Etienne, (27) and Conrad, (33) van Heerden are in the intensive care unit of the Medforum Hospital in Pretoria after one of the six tankers exploded while they were battling to contain the blaze. Three other people, two policemen and a civilian, were injured, when the tankers exploded at the Ermelo railway station. The blaze was first detected at about 1.15am, and firefighters from the Ermelo fire department were called to the scene. At one stage the water pressure on the fire department’s system went down, hampering attempts to cool down one tanker which overheated and exploded. The explosion pushed the tanker forward for about 50 metres, and the five people were injured.
