EIGHT DEAD IN KZN VIOLENCE

EIGHT people were killed overnight in a string of shootings in Lindelani, a black township north of Durban on South Africa’s east coast, police said on Saturday. A police spokesman in KwaZulu-Natal province said all the victims were apparently killed by a single group of armed men in attacks on several homes in a part of the township known as Richmond Farm. In the first, a couple was shot dead, while further on another couple was killed and their house set on fire. Four people, including two children aged six and 11, were killed in a third house, which was also set ablaze before the attackers fled. Police were unable to establish a motive for the attacks, as shocked and fearful residents refused to speak about the killings, despite a reinforced presence of police and soldiers, the spokesman said. They have offered a reward of R250000 rand for information leading to the arrest of the killers.
