ANGLOGOLD FIGHTS SCAM

ANGLOGOLD has launched an international advertising campaign to warn people against an alleged scam by people using a variation on their name and company logo. A group calling themselves South Africa Anglo Gold Corporation sent letters to members of the public in Canada, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Australia proposing their participation in an apparently fraudulent scheme that involves the transfer of funds from South Africa. The letters seek funds to guarantee or assist in large business deals. Once someone answers these letter the con artists — in a number of cases syndicates of apparently mainly Nigerians — get the businessmen to forward funds to be used for the hiring of security guards, bank guarantees and other services relating to the transfer of the funds. These funds are removed from the accounts and the conmen disappear. Anglogold spokesman James Duncan said the company will be publishing its advertisement in most South African daily newspapers as well as in financial and leading publications in the other countries.
