OWN CORRESPONDENT, Manchester | Wednesday 4.25pm.
BAFANA Bafana midfielder Quinton Fortune on Wednesday completed his move to Manchester United after being issued with a work permit.
Fortune has signed a four-year contract at Old Trafford following his transfer from Atletico Madrid in a deal worth a reported 1.5-million.
The midfielder, a member of South Africa’s 1998 World Cup squad, will not be considered for Wednesday night’s Premiership match at Coventry.
Fortune has also been ruled out of Friday’s European Super Cup clash with Lazio in Monaco, and the first game he is eligible for is the Bank Holiday Monday encounter with Newcastle at Old Trafford.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson moved for Fortune after he impressed in a recent trial at the club and he believes he will prove to be a useful recruit to his vast squad.
“He’s young, and I think he will be a good addition,” Ferguson said.
Fortune is eligible for the European Champions League and turned down a move to Spanish side Real Valladolid to join United.
Ferguson is also continuing his efforts to sign a defender before next week’s Champions League transfer deadline following the news that Ronny Johnsen requires knee surgery. — AFP
