THE ANC will not comment on the future of its embattled Mpumalanga premier until a special team of attorneys has studied Public Protector Selby Baqwa’s damning ‘lies’ report. The report, released on Wednesday, slams Premier Ndaweni Mahlangu for telling journalists in June that it was acceptable for politicians to lie to the public in certain circumstances. Baqwa said in his 14-page report that the comments discredited Mahlangu’s office as premier and the government itself and also violated sections of the Constitution. He recommended that the matter be urgently, publicly debated in Mpumalanga’s legislature so that a strong motion of censure or reprimand could be issued against Mahlangu. ANC media co-ordinator, Nomfanelo Koto-Mayosi, said on Thursday that the ANC was also unable to comment until it received detailed advice of the issue from its attorneys. She said ANC secretary general, Kgalema Motlanthe, was scheduled to meet with the party’s legal department and attorneys later in the day to discuss both the report and the party’s stance on the issue.
