PETER HUWELE of LibLife AC won R10 000 on Sunday in a finely-judged victory in the 50km City to City race — his first major run in nine months.
Huwele’s teammates also took top honours in the race –from Johannesburg to Centurion, south of Pretoria — including Helene Joubert, who retained the women’s title she won last year.
Huwele won in 2hrs 48min 32 secs, ahead of Free State runner Sergio Motsoeneng at 2:48:41, and his LibLife AC teammate Soccer Ncube, the defending champion, who came in third with 2:48:48.
Motsoeneng finished so strongly that an appeal was lodged by rivals who accused him of cheating, but the judges upheld his win, noting that finished the race in the top ten last year, and is one of his province’s top marathon runners.
