THE International Federation of PGA Tours has named the trophy for the World Golf Championships – NEC Invitational in honour of Gary Player. The “Gary Player Cup”, which will be presented to the champion of the NEC Invitational, was designed and produced by Wedgwood, England, a sister company of Waterford Crystal. The 72-hole, stroke-play NEC Invitational begins tomorrow at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio in the USA and is the second of three World Golf Championships events that will debut in 1999. “I consider it a tremendous honour to have my name inscribed on the trophy that is associated with these world-class players and this prestigious event,” Player said.
