PROPERTY worth R153 million was damaged in the Cape Flats tornado last weekend, the Cape Town city Council said on Friday. The figure was disclosed at a city council media briefing attended by city manager Andrew Boraine, mayor Nomaindia Mfeketo and the city’s chief civil protection officer, Mike Marsden. Marsden said of this amount, R10,4-million was from infrastructure such as electricity, roads and storm water drains which were damaged in the storm. A total of 263 housing units were severely damaged and declared unsafe while 1729 units were damaged to some degree, but would be repaired within four weeks. Marsden said the figures excluded informal dwellings and backyard shacks. Five people were killed, 177 injured and 5000 left homeless when the tornado struck.
