Rudy Joubert is new Boland coach

ANDY COLQUHOUN, Paarl | Friday 5.15pm.

SARFU coaching manager Rudy Joubert has been appointed as the new coach of Boland.

Joubert will take up his two-year appointment at the end of the World Cup when his responsibilities as coach of the Namibian national team are concluded.

Joubert succeeds Mike Bayly who has left the province to take charge at Italian club Rovigo.

The new coach’s first job will be to secure Boland’s top players on contract.

Exciting young centre Marius Joubert is already understood to have been approached by Western Province although Springbok squad member Wayne Julies is understood to have agreed a deal despite the interest of Natal.

The appointment will be the first as a provincial head coach for Joubert although he has built up an impressive CV through the 1990s.

The 37-year-old was appointed SARFU’s director of coaching in March 1997 having been part of the backroom staff at the 1995 World Cup. He is the author of several South African rugby coaching manuals.

He was Kitch Christie’s technical adviser, having linked up with Christie at Transvaal in 1992 when Joubert was made director of coaching.

Joubert played scrumhalf and flyhalf at school but moved to centre or wing with Tukkies before his career was cut short by injury.

He then took over Pretoria University’s under-19s and won the league for five successive years before taking over the senior side and again winning championships to bring him to the notice of Christie. — MWP
