FORMER Tanzanian president Julius Nyerere was admitted to a London hospital on Thursday, playing down fears that his life is in danger. Nyerere, (77) popularly known as Mwalimu or ‘teacher’, is reported to have started feeling unwell about six weeks ago. His condition deteriorated further after attending an Organisation of African Unity summit in Algiers in July. Since falling ill, Nyerere has cancelled most of his local and international assignments, including his mediation efforts to end the long-standing Burundian conflict.
