DEDEKIND WINS 100m FREESTYLE

SOUTH African squad captain Brendon Dedekind won the 100m freestyle at the All Africa Games on Monday, grabbing victory in the final few metres. Dedekind, a 50m specialist and ranked only fourth in the 100m in South Africa, clocked 50.50sec to push Algeria’s African record holder Salim Iles, who timed 50.58, into second spot. Iles, who set a Games record of 50.36 in the morning heats, just made the touch ahead of South Africa’s Nicholas Folker, third at the World Student Games three months ago, who claimed bronze in 50.61. Zimbabwe denied the hosts a third consecutive clean sweep of swimming gold medals, winning the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
