THE South African netball team claimed top honours in the All Africa Games on Tuesday, collecting the gold medal after beating Malawi 74-35 in the final match of the tournament. The South Africans, unbeaten at the tournament, ensured the win with good discipline, communication and skills. In other games played on Tuesday, sixth placed Namibia beat Tanzania by 53-43, Kenya narrowly beat Botswana 47-42, thereby pushing their opponents to fifth place in the tournament overall. The award ceremony following the matches was marred by controversy and dissent when the Malawian team management registered an official complaint after being placed in third position. According to the Malawians second place belonged to them. Scoring technicalities employed to break the tie between the two teams were cited as the issue of disagreement. The positions eventually remained unchanged, with South Africa first, Kenya second, Malawi third, followed by Tanzania, Botswana and Namibia. The South African Proteas leave for the Netball World Cup in Christchurch, New Zealand on Tuesday night.
