A STRIKE by officials at the All Africa Games judo final provided yet another controversial twist to the continental showpiece. Referees, not paid their $40 daily payment by organizers, went on strike, delaying Tuesday’s finals by two hours. France’s Francois Besson, sporting director of the international judo federation, said the action was taken because of broken promises. The money was promised at 11am on Tuesday but it had still not been received by the time the finals were scheduled to start at 5pm. The international federation stipulates $40 dollars a day for officials, and the finals eventually got underway when the South African currency of Rand was accepted for payment.
