Hungarian herbalist Charles Josef Baksai, (63) escaped being convicted of murder on Wednesday when he appeared in the Carolina Regional Court in Mpumalanga. Instead, he was found guilty of the lesser charge of culpable homicide for killing of teenager Rooi Mabuza two years ago. Baksai pleaded not guilty to murder in an almost empty court. Prosecutor Johan van Vuuren said after Wednesday’s hearing that Magistrate Andreas Mastoroudes convicted Baksai, who claimed he shot Mabuza dead because he thought he was a burglar. In Baksai’s previous court appearance, on August 5, nine charges of rape and child labour were dropped against him. But he pleaded guilty to five charges of luring young girls to engage in indecent acts, and is on bail of R3000.
