SOUTH AFRICAN President Thabo Mbeki flew to Tanzania on Sunday for talks with President Benjamin Mkapa and an address on promoting democracy in southern Africa. Mkapa is expected to meet Mbeki at the airport in Dar es Salaam and host the South African leader at a dinner late Sunday. On Monday, Mbeki is due to address the first annual meeting of the Electoral Commissions’ Forum of the 14-nation Southern African Development Community. The meeting will focus on ways to entrench democracy in southern Africa, Mbeki told reporters before flying from Pretoria. His aide Parks Mankahlana said the gathering was part of efforts to rid the continent of unelected and dictatorial governments. After his address, Mbeki is due to hold talks with Mkapa before returning home. The talks are expected to focus on efforts to bring peace to southern Africa, especially the Great Lakes region and troubled Democratic Republic of Congo. On Friday Mbeki returned to South Africa from New York where he addressed the UN General Assembly and met with US President Bill Clinton.
