FORMER Tanzanian president Julius Nyerere is in a “critical” condition, a spokeswoman for the London hospital where he is being treated said Friday. “He is critical at the moment. He was in a stable condition yesterday and his condition has worsened,” she said. She said his family “want everyone’s prayers for him.” Nyerere, (77) was admitted to St Thomas’ hospital in London on September 9. He is suffering from leukaemia. Earlier in Dar es Salaam, presidential spokesman Geoffrey Nkurlu said the former head of state’s condition had suddenly worsened overnight and that he had once again lost the power of speech. Nkurlu’s statement said President Benjamin Mkapa had called again on the nation to pray for Nyerere.
