ROBERTS FASTEST IN QUALIFYING

KENNY Roberts Jnr gave notice Friday that he intends chasing all the way for the world title when he clocked the fastest time in qualifying for Sunday’s South African 500cc Grand Prix in Welkom. Also making a late charge for the title is Japan’s Tadayuki Okada, winner last week of the Australian Grand Prix, who set up a time of one minute, 38.819 seconds on the new Phakisa track Friday, just 0.006 seconds behind the American Suzuki rider in the first qualifying session. Championship leader Alex Criville of Spain could only manage seventh place, 0.734 seconds behind Roberts. Reports said Criville was feeling giddy Friday from antibiotics he is taking after he cracked a bone in his left wrist in practice in Australia a week ago. Criville is 41 points ahead of Okada, his Repsol Honda teamamte, and has 51 points on Roberts. With 25 points for a win, both Roberts and Okada will be looking for top placings in at least two of the remaining events on the calendar to be certain to edge out Criville. Strong winds in Welkom over the past few days blew dust on the new track and left it slippery for the morning practice session, but maintenance crews managed to clear it in time for the afternoon’s official qualifier. Finer weather is forecast for the weekend.
