MORNANTAU Hayward’s cricketing career received a new lease of life on Sunday as he achieved the first ten wicket haul of his first class career. The flame haired seamer snapped up four for 53 on the final day of Eastern Province’s Supersport Series match against Griqualand West at St George’s Park to signal his return to top flight cricket. Hayward highlighted an otherwise dull draw between the two sides after a match dominated by the batsmen. On the final day, Griquas batted throughout most of the final day before being bowled out for 186. At the close EP, chasing an impossible 179 for victory, ended on 8 without loss when bad light stopped play 45 minutes before the scheduled close. The only real winner was Hayward, who was handed the Man Of The Match award. He ended with match figures of ten for 143.It was a major milestone for the 23-year-old since he burst onto the scene during the West Indies A tour of South Africa in 1997-98, and then battled to regain the same form a season later. At one stage he had reduced Griquas to 138 for seven to give his side a faint glimmer of victory, before the nuggety Griquas tail dug in and pulled the fat out of the fire. But for Hayward that won’t have mattered too much.
