HUNDREDS OF COAL MINERS TO LOSE JOBS

MORE than 200 Delmas Colliery workers in Mpumalanga are to lose their jobs, and contractors will forfeit work worth millions of rands when the company restructures at the end of the month. This is due to the low demand for low-grade bituminous coal in the domestic heating and metallurgical markets, said Ingwe Coal Corporation spokesman Sol Morathi on Thursday. He said the 35-year-old mine’s ageing underground technology is incurring high production costs, which makes the restructuring necessary. The plan includes retrenching 244 workers, and terminating the services of 380 contractors.
