Sundowns face Pirates in Rothmans semi

ANDREW MUCHINERIPI, Pretoria | Monday 10.30am.

SUNDOWNS will face Orlando Pirates in the Rothmans Cup semi-finals after completing a 6-3 aggregate victory over Bloemfontein Celtic in the last quarter-final at Loftus Stadium on Sunday.

Daniel Mudau, Isaac Shai and new signing Alain Amougou scored for the Brazilians before Willem Vries struck a late consolation goal for Phunya Sele Sele.

Sundowns, who took a 3-2 lead into the match from the first leg in the Free State, have home advantage over the Buccaneers next weekend with the return match at FNB Stadium in mid-November.

Jomo Cosmos, whose 3-0 aggregate loss to Free State Stars was overturned at the weekend when Stars were found guilty of using an ineligible player, face Manning Rangers in the other half of the draw.

Wits University moved into second place on the Castle Premiership standings last Friday night with a 1-0 home win over African Wanderers in a dull match settled by a 71st-minute William ‘Lucky’ Qaba goal.

Hellenic replaced the Clever Boys within 24 hours through a 1-0 victory at Free State Stars and Kaizer Chiefs defeated Santos 3-1 at Johannesburg Stadium with former Bafana Bafana midfielder Linda Buthelezi oustanding for Amakhosi.

Rangers became the third club to fill second place in as many days when they won 2-1 at Moroka Swallows. Keryn Jordan and Bruce Ramakodi had the Mighty Maulers two goals ahead before Sibusiso Mazibuko struck for the Birds.

At the wrong end of the standings, Bush Bucks returned to Umtata and made a wonderful start against Classic with Patrick Mayo scoring inside 60 seconds. However, Thato Maleka struck twice after half-time to give his side victory.
