HUNDREDS of Johannesburg municipal employees took to the streets in the centre of the city to protest against the Greater Johannesburg Council’s iGoli 2002 plans, which include privatising several of the council’s key assets. Congress of South African Trade Unions-affiliated South African Municipal Workers’ Union and Independent Municipal Allied Trade Union members, as well as Metro Bus Service drivers took part in the march. Samwu president Petrus Mashishi said the protest action is the start of a programme of continued mass action in an attempt to force the council back to the negotiation table.
