AFRICA FISHING BOOST

THE Food and Agriculture Organization will coordinate a project financed by Britain to revitalize the African fishing industry, the UN agency said in a statement Monday. The initiative, with a projected cost of $34-million dollars over five years, will target some 5,3-million people in 24 of the continent’s poorest countries, the agency said. In its statement, the FAO said it hoped to develop the fishing industry through low-cost, small-scale activities that will draw on the knowledge of local people. The FAO said it hopes the countries concerned will follow its Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, adopted in October 1995, which calls for the protection of certain species, the reduction of water pollution and improved conservation efforts.
