KZN THUMP WP

WESTERN Province’s woeful season continued as they slumped to a 10-wicket defeat against KwaZulu-Natal in the four-day SuperSport Series match at Newlands on Sunday. Having been dismissed an hour before tea for 260 in their second innings on the final day, the hosts had the impossible task of defending 31 runs. The visitors rattled off the runs in just six overs to ensure the win. But Western Province put up a fight after being 106 for six overnight with a 75-run partnership between Brian McMillan and Roger Telemachus for the ninth wicket. Telemachus was eventually brilliantly caught behind by Errol Stewart off the bowling of left-arm seamer Gary Gilder for 46. McMillan watched as number eleven Ryan Joffe went in the same fashion for three, leaving him stranded on 95 not out. The foundation for the win was laid on the second day when Stewart scored an impressive 151 not out which enabled his side to amass a total of 451 for six in reply to Western Province’s first innings score of 222 all out. Then Gilder stepped up to take a SuperSport Series best of 6-61 that ensured the victory. — MWP
