NO BIAS, FINDS SABC PROBE

A TASK team appointed by the SABC to investigate the state broadcaster’s editorial independence on Wednesday found that there is no evidence supporting claims of political bias, unfair labour practices or infringement of editorial independence. The task, which consisted of mainly SABC board members, with advocate Sias Reinecke as the only independent counsel, was appointed following requests in April and May by several organisations for an independent probe into the public broadcaster sparked by the axing of Special Assignment presenter Max du Preez. Annoucing the finding, SABC board chairman Paulus Zulu said the team had found no evidence to support the allegations. “The cited cases illustrate what is common editorial practise, where editors have a responsibility for ensuring that programmes are balanced and accurate,” he said.
