STORM KILLS FIVE IN TRANSKEI

FIVE people were killed and another 10 injured when their village was struck by lightning in a violent thunderstorm that lashed the northern Transkei on Sunday. Umtata police said two people were killed instantly and 10 injured in a homestead in the Elliottdale district, while another three people were struck by lightning at a nearby village. The area, ravaged by bush fires in recent months that left thousands homeless, was also devastated by tornadoes late last year.
